Ok so why is Lonzo actually getting this much shit? I mean people everywhere are calling him a bust, but is that true? Many Lakers fans don’t think so and I agree with them.
Let’s start with his stats. This is where people seem to direct most of the hate towards. First of all, Lonzo plays every away game as the most hated player in the stadium, and for a 20 year old, that can really get to you.
Lonzo is averaging 8.8 points a game, 6.8 assists a game, and 6.3 rebounds a game. This means that his is directly contributing for at least 22.4 points a game, not counting 3 pointers or rebounds. For a Lakers team that is averaging 105.5 points a game that means that he is directly contributing on 21.2% of the Lakers’ points. Let’s compare that to Stephen Curry, one of the best point guards in the NBA. Curry directly contributes for an average of at least 38.4 points a game, which is about 32% of the Warriors’ points. I don’t know about you but I don’t think that Lonzo Ball is quite at the level of Steph Curry, so this 10% discrepancy makes sense, and is what you should expect from a rookie.
Another reason I think Lonzo is getting so much hate is because of what people expect of him. Right now, Lonzo is a role player, and a damn good one at that. He consistently takes all of the attention and draws it away from the rest of his team. This, paired with a pretty good assist to turnover ratio, about 3:1, allows him to create space for his teammates to produce. He is also good for a chunk of rebounds a game, and his quickness up the court allows him to create his own transition.
So in conclusion, is Lonzo the next MJ? Maybe, time will tell, but he certainly isn’t a bust, and it isn’t time to call for a trade. Let the kid develop, and I believe that with the right tools, Lonzo Ball will become a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.
